Why in the news?

  • Guam kingfishers went extinct in the wild almost forty years ago.
  • Now, six of the birds have been released on Cooper Island in the Pacific Ocean after keepers from Whipsnade and London Zoos helped to hand-rear them.
  • Experts are now monitoring the rare kingfishers, with the hope of returning them to their native home of Guam in the near future.

About Guam kingfisher:

  • It is also known as a sihek.
  • It is a reddish-orange bird in the kingfisher family.
  • It has blue wings.
  • It is about the same size as a North American robin.
  • It is one of two subspecies, the other being the now-extinct Micronesian kingfisher.

Cooper Island:

  • It is a small island of the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. 
  • It is one of the \"Little Sisters\" islands.
