Why in the news?

  • Health workers in conflict-ridden Congo struggle to contain Mpox outbreak.
  • Overall, Congo has more than 21,000 of the 25,093 confirmed and suspected Mpox cases in Africa this year, according to WHO’s most recent count.

About Democratic Republic of the Congo:

  • It is a country in Central Africa. 
  • By land area the Congo is the second-largest country in Africa, after Algeria. 
  • With a population of around 109 million, it is the most populous Francophone country in the world. 
  • Its national capital and largest city is Kinshasa, which is also the economic center. 
  • It is located in central sub-Saharan Africa.
  • It is bordered by:
    • Republic of the Congo to the northwest 
    • Central African Republic to the north 
    • South Sudan to the northeast 
    • Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi and by Tanzania (across Lake Tanganyika) to the east
    • Zambia to the south and southeast
    • Angola to the southwest
    • South Atlantic Ocean and Cabinda Province exclave of Angola to the west
  • It straddles the Equator, with one-third to the north and two-thirds to the south.
