Why in the news?

  • The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, arrived in New Delhi as he kick-started a two-day maiden visit to India to boost bilateral ties on a range of areas, including energy and connectivity, amid escalating tensions in West Asia.

About Abu Dhabi:

  • It is the capital city of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). 
  • It is the UAE\'s second-most populous city after Dubai. 
  • It is located on an island in the Persian Gulf, off the Central West Coast. 
  • Abu Dhabi\'s rapid development and urbanization, coupled with the massive oil and gas reserves and production and relatively high average income, have transformed it into a large, developed metropolis. 
  • It is the country\'s centre of politics and industry, and a major culture and commerce center. 
  • It accounts for about two-thirds of the roughly $503 billion UAE economy.

United Arab Emirates (UAE):

  • It is a country in West Asia, at the eastern end of the Arabian Peninsula. 
  • It is a federal, elective monarchy composed of seven emirates, with Abu Dhabi as its capital.
  • It shares land borders with:
    • Oman to the east and northwest
    • Saudi Arabia to the southwest
  • It is surrounded by water bodies including the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. 
  • As of 2024, it has an estimated population of about 10 million, of which 11% are Emiratis.
  • Dubai, is the most populous city, and is an international hub.
  • Islam is the official religion.
  • Arabic is the official language, while English is the most spoken language and the language of business.
  • It has successfully completed the Arab world\'s first nuclear power plant.
  • Nearly the entire country is desert with no perennial streams.
  • Tropic of Cancer passes through UAE, specifically the Abu Dhabi emirate.
